My Robotics Background Has Made Me a Better Gardener

Deployable robotics at scale is a difficult problem. Every city is different, every partner platform provides new integration quirks. I’ve adapted some of the lessons I’ve learned maintaining robots out into the field and have internalized them to habits I keep in my day-to-day hobbies like gardening.

Robotic engineering has taught me the importance of attention to detail, patience, and adaptability. When designing robots, even the slightest mistake or oversight can lead to catastrophic failures. This has made me a much more meticulous and detail-oriented person, which has translated well into my gardening practices. Taking the time to carefully plan out my garden, considering factors like soil quality, sunlight exposure, and plant compatibility, has become second nature to me. I've learned that a successful garden, like a successful robot, requires constant monitoring and adjustments to ensure optimal performance.


This year’s garden theme is, “tall.”

Furthermore, as a robotics engineer, I've learned the value of persistence and resilience. When building and deploying robots, setbacks are inevitable. It's not uncommon to encounter unforeseen issues that require creative problem-solving and a willingness to persevere in the face of adversity. These same qualities have served me well in my gardening endeavors. When faced with challenges like pests, weather fluctuations, or plant diseases, I've learned to approach the situation with a level head, seeking out solutions and not giving up easily.

In summary, being a robotics engineer has not only taught me valuable technical skills but has also instilled in me a sense of discipline, patience, and adaptability that has translated well into other areas of my life, including gardening.
